Applicants who thrive show evidence of long-term engagement in engineering, robotics, coding, or applied research, clear contribution to team projects, and the ability to articulate how they learn by doing; WPI is more forgiving of narrower STEM focus versus broad humanities breadth, but expects consistent academic preparation in math and science and real-world problem-solving experience.

Supplemental essay strategy

Tie your essay to a specific WPI program or project framework, for example the Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP), Major Qualifying Project (MQP), the term-based project courses, project centers like the Maker Space, or faculty labs in robotics/biomed. Describe a concrete project you want to pursue at WPI, name relevant faculty or centers, and explain how WPI’s term system and team-based projects match your working style and goals.

1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from WPI (search official admissions site or Reddit r/wpi). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
