What University of Miami weights most

University of Miami favors students who demonstrate genuine, specific engagement with Miami-area opportunities and who will contribute to campus life in targeted ways, such as through music, entrepreneurship, marine science, or pre-medical research. They value applicants who pair solid academic preparation with demonstrated fit for Miami’s professional schools and conservatory-style programs, so strong audition/portfolio work, business competitions, or sustained marine/field research can outweigh a slightly lower GPA; conversely, applicants without that demonstrable fit face more scrutiny than at generic private universities.

Supplemental essay strategy

Use the Why Miami essay to cite concrete programs and faculty, for example the Frost School of Music ensembles or studios, the Herbert Business School experiential courses and Miami Herbert Launch Pad, the Rosenstiel School marine labs and Biscayne Bay field opportunities, or specific research groups at the Miller School for pre-med prep. Show prior work that directly maps to one program, name a class, faculty member, lab, ensemble, or Miami-based internship you plan to pursue, and explain how that choice fits a realistic 4-year plan rather than vague enthusiasm.

Where to focus next

If you only have time for one thing this month, do this:

  1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from University of Miami (search official admissions site or Reddit r/miami). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
  2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
  3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
