Admissions is stricter about academic seriousness and fit for a women-centered environment, and a bit looser on single-minded pursuit of Columbia elite brand when applicants demonstrate clear reasons for choosing Barnard specifically.
Use the why-Barnard essay to show specific ties to Barnard programs, faculty, or student groups you could join and explain why those options matter in ways Columbia alone does not, for example the Athena Center, Barnard’s feminist curriculum, Dual BA-style cross-registration plans, or the Barnard-Columbia advising model. Pair one concrete Barnard resource with a short example of how you would use it (course cross-enrollment, research lab, club leadership, or on-campus community work) to make your interest feel informed and institution-specific.
